HSV is more commonly transmitted when there are no visible symptoms or lesions. Bear in mind that the infection is passed on by contact with the lesions and the virus can therefore be passed to or from areas not covered by the condom. Thus using condoms for intercourse with your partner will help to reduce the risk somewhat, but the benefit is uncertain. There are some other known methods that can help to avoid catching the virus.
