Genital Herpes Testing
Genital herpes testing and oral herpes testing are virus specific, meaning a pap smear is not used for diagnosing this condition.
A more highly sensitive means is a serology that measures immune response antibodies against the virus. However, it only identifies HSV exposure and its active existence. A new FDA approved type specific test, glycoprotein G, measures with accuracy comparable to the Western Blot technologies.

There are two methods of diagnostic evaluation for this condition. Viral cultures are scrapped or aspirated from the lesions that are then sent to the laboratory for culture and examination. This test is inaccurate due to the high probability of false negatives and cannot confirm the absence of the virus.
