Herpes of the mouth cannot be surgically treated, as HPV is with a cone biopsy and colposcopy. The virus gets into the body through skin lesions, saliva, and other personal contact. It travels to nerve cells and settles there causing lesions on the lips, mouth, the inside of the cheeks, and other oral areas when active. The symptoms last approximately a week.
